The Meat Market

1. "Imagine the chaos at the abattoir slaughtering 13,500 animals daily when its actual capacity is just 2,500. And now imagine the scenario if one fine day the supply is reduced by over 80%. Was a majority of Delhi's meat eating population expected to become vegetarian overnight? Compared to the 2,500 animals being slaughtered daily at Idgah, the actual demand for meat including total number of goats, sheep and buffaloes in Delhi is estimated to be as high as:

  • Saturday/ Sunday/ Wednesday
    12,000-15,000
  • Monday/ Thursday
    8,000-10,000

This is the routine manner of slaughtering meat for human consumption at the only abattoir authorised (and managed) by the government in Delhi.

2. "Therefore, every time a meat seller hangs a goat carcass at his shop to be prominently visible to the public, he is breaking the law. Also, every meat seller who does not use a refrigerator or an icebox to store the meat is again flouting breaking the rules.
