Friends of Freedom was very active in the last three months. Though the inclement weather had an impact on the scheduled programmes, the libertarian spirit was kept alive. At least for two months, the continued rains in this part of the country played havoc in organising events as planned. Jeevika festival was forced to postpone indefinitely and a few discussions as well. Yet the New Year was very vibrant with the emails, chats and informal meetings among the members.

Soumya Balakrishnan and Arun Koshy Philip started working on analysing the licensing system for food shops in Chennai. They selected twenty fast food stalls of various natures in east Tambaram of Chennai suburbs for case study. They contacted the local municipal authorities on this issue. There was reluctance in sharing the information from both the parties alike. Both of the research interns have taken active interest in studying the case. Though it was planned as a weekend study, the various issues surfaced during the study changed the whole pattern of the study and now it is expected that the project will be completed by mid of March. We hope this will be one of the major initiatives in research areas taken by FoF in the recent past and will be a successful one also.

D Dhanuraj, who conducts research studies for Centre for Civil Society is assisted by FoF members. Recently, he has done a study on the fishery management in Pulicat Lake. The objective of the research project was to analyse the traditional fishery management system called Paadu prevailing in the Pulicat area. During the study, the research findings were briefed to the FoF members and discussions were held on that many times. The draft paper is submitted to CCS already.

On February 04, 2006 Mr Raj Cherubal spoke on education voucher to the FoF members. It was held in Madras Christian college campus. Everyone was excited by listening to the concept of vouchers. FoF members were also happy to have new members turning up on that day. They were inducted into FoF. There was a consensus on the part of everyone to take up the propaganda part of education vouchers. It was decided to have a few meetings on the same line in the coming months.

The much-awaited Jeevika will be held on February 22 and 23 at madras Christian College campus. Every one is busy with planning and scheduling the screening, discussions and publicity. We hope Jeevika will leave a lasting impression among the Chennaites.
