I wouldn’t mind a prostitute living in my locality
Ankush Arora
(LACS Delhi 2005, Hindu College, ankusharora3@yahoo.com)

Your next-door neighbor has broken a new piece of news to you that a prostitute has recently moved in to your neighborhood. What do you think you first reaction would be? She would certainly be a part of your day-to-day gossip sessions. Would you be cordial and accommodating to her just as you would be with any other new neighbor? Or would you approach the RWA to have her ousted from your locality? The ‘janta’ speaks…

“The response of the neighborhood would be largely negative. I, on the other hand, would be comfortable with it without any reservations whatsoever. I would not really care. For me she would be like any other neighbor of my locality. However, if the neighborhood has a problem with her or if they try to harm her, then I would definitely be up in arms to take a more proactive role. I would advocate her right to livelihood and will defend her in whatever way I could.” Pratyush, Amity School of Communication.

“I wouldn't mind having a prostitute in my locality. It's his/her personal freedom to choose where s/he lives and what s/he does. As long as s/he is not impinging on my freedom, I am fine with it. “ Sudeep Duggal, IILM.

“I would be a bit uneasy, not because I disapprove of her or her choice of profession, but because there would be no common grounds between her reality and my reality. Nevertheless, I would still go to her place as I would to any other neighbours.” Girija Duggal, DU.

“I would not have a problem with a prostitute-neighbor unless her behavior is harmful. In fact, I would have a soft corner for her for there must have been certain circumstances, which would have driven her to a profession like this. Moreover, if she wants to improve herself, I can certainly forward my help to her. “  Monica Batra, Homemaker.

“I would be indifferent to her as I am with my other neighbours.”  Vanshika Sahini, Hindu College.

“If it is convenient enough I would actually want to talk to her. I find sex workers very fascinating insofar as what drives them to this profession. “-Sumit Ray, Hindu College.
