As many as 22 journalists drawn from various Hindi newspapers, news agencies, TV channels, magazines and websites successfully attended the 2 day residential program ìpolicy: Certificate Course in Public Policy for Journalists at the Atrium, Surajkund on 11-12 June, 2011.
The Course, supported by the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, was designed and delivered in Hindi, as the Hindi media commands a much larger readership and suffers from a lack of training opportunities as compared to its English counterpart.
The journalists, who collected from various Hindi speaking parts of the country, got the opportunity to interact with
eminent speakers and experts and learn diverse facets of public policy and their application in day-to-day reporting.
The subjects touched upon ranged from media ethics, governance accountability to social media and property rights in India. A special attraction remained the session on ‘Social Change through Public Policy’ during which the participants got a chance to perceive public policy issues more holistically and also learnt ways to bring about positive social impact through effective reportage. The 10 principles of sound public policy formed the basis on which they were asked to identify and analyse issues of importance.
From the point of view of journalists, increased knowledge sharing expands their horizon to challenge conventional solutions and explore innovative liberal solutions to public policy issues which can address the root causes of the problems in the long-term. During the working groups, the participants formed teams and were given issues of public policy to report in a critical and analytical way. Research toolkits provided a framework to analyze each story/ issue/ problem from a policy angle thereby facilitating better and informed articles.
The participating journalists learned valuable lessons from the talks by domain experts and feedback during Q & A sessions. They also had favorable peer to peer interactions on important issues and topics of interest. All the participating journalists were awarded a certificate upon the successful completion of the program.
