LSS Graduate Pune 2002

In July-August I participated in the exchange programme on Political Economy at ASIA INSTITUTE OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, Hong Kong organized and sponsored by THE FUND FOR AMERICAN STUDIES in affiliation with Georgetown University and Hong Kong University.

I also happened to meet Gaurav Tiwari who had worked with CCS in the past and is currently pursuing MA in Economics in America.

Professors were very well learned and experienced. We had Professor James Lingle for American Studies and Political Science from Georgetown University. His views on politics were really exceptional.  For economics we had Professor Thomas Rustici from George Mason University. I really enjoyed the way he explained economics in our day to day living.

Lectures were really informative.  The course included books by Robert Dahl: On Democracy, Economics in One Lesson and Capitalism the Unknown Ideal by Ayn Rand.

We were around 45 students from 13 countries.  We also had guest lectures by  leaders from the field of Economics, politics and business.

There was one by Mrs. Bowen former director of Oval Office, White House Another by Simon Lee who runs the think tank The Lion Rock Institute in Hong Kong. The topics were, The role of the executive in the US Government, Relevance of traditional Chinese values to free enterprise system Non economic factors affecting growth of China Rule of Law Private Equity and venture capital in Asia Free market economy - Lessons from Hong Kong and many more.

The programme also included lot of touring around Hong Kong.

At the end of the programme to measure the learning of the students they had also kept tests and providing graduate and under graduate credit hours from Georgetown University. I opted for graduate credit and scored B- . Well considering the amount of hours that were put in to prepare for the exams this was not that bad.

Thanks to Parth for providing us with these kinds of opportunities. It was indeed an outstanding experience I must say.
